Cyclone Mandous: Flight Services Affected in Chennai

CHENNAI: As Cyclone Mandous comes close to making landfall somewhere in the Eastern coast of the country, several safety measures are in place to combat any untoward incident that might be triggered by the winds and rain.

Fearing turbulence and high winds, several flights have been cancelled at the Chennai Airport. Regular operations have also been adversely affected in the airports due to adverse weather conditions.

"Kindly take note of the Flight cancellations at Chennai Intl Airport on 09.12.2022 due to adverse weather conditions forecasted. Passengers are requested to check with concerned airline(s) for further updates," Chennai Airport's Official Twitter handle mentioned.

"Heavy rainfall in Chennai today & tomorrow as cyclone Mandous further expected to move North-West direction and expected to cross Puducherry & Sriharikota by tonight or early morning," said S Balachandran. He is the Deputy Director General of Meteorology at the Regional Metrology Centre in Chennai.

A holiday has been declared for schools and colleges on Saturday. Some of them are Chennai, Vellore, Villupuram, Cuddalore, Ranipet, Tiruvallur, Chengalpattu, and Kancheepuram on Saturday due to the heavy rain forecast.

Indian Meteorological Department had announced about an atmospheric depression over the southwest and southeast Bay of Bengal. This later intensified into Cyclone Mandous and now aims to make landfall somewhere between Mahabalipuram of Tamil Nadu and Sriharikota of Andhra Pradesh.

The cyclone intensified on Friday and caused rains in several places. Some of them include Chennai, Puducherry and Thirumala. Several organisations including educational ones were announced to remain closed for Friday. Tamil Nadu's Chengalpattu, Villupuram and Kancheepuram as well as the entire Puducherry are on high alert. Fishermen from the region were told not to venture out into the sea and people were asked to stay indoors until it is essential.

National Disaster Response Force has also been kept on high alert to handle any possible incident.
